Barium Carbonate, also known as witherite, is a compound used extensively in the ceramics industry, electroplating, and other applications.
In ceramics, particularly in ceramic glazes barium carbonate is used like a flux to help combine particular coloring oxides to make unique colors, and provide certain finishes. Barium Carbonate is often used when producing green colors and and to neutralize compositions containing barium chlorate and potassium chlorate.
Barium Carbonate is used as an additive to clays to precipitate soluble salts such as calcium and magnesium sulfates that cause the "bloom" or efflorescence.
Barium Carbonate also has applications in cement making
In electroplating, barium carbonate is used to control the sulfate in electroplating baths .
In the tile, earthenware, brick and pottery industries, Barium Carbonate is used as an addition to clays to precipitate soluble salts such as calcium and magnesium sulfates that cause efflorescence. Barium Carbonate also has uses in in cement making, manufacturing porcelain and glass.
